An Adventurous California Elopement in San Diego

August 14, 2026

I don’t think I’ll ever stop loving California elopements. There’s something about the way the state holds so much within it (like the coast, the mountains, the desert, all within reach of each other) that makes it feel like the perfect place to go somewhere and get married with the people you love most. This particular day started at the beach in San Diego and somehow ended in the mountains, and honestly I wouldn’t change a single thing about how it unfolded.

We didn’t have a strict plan, which was kind of the whole point. It was just two people who wanted to get married, a car, and a general direction. By the time the sun was setting over the mountains, we had moved through two completely different worlds in a single day, and it felt exactly right for them.

Groom wraps his arms around his laughing bride from behind on the tide rocks, a joyful still from their California elopement.

Wide shot of the newlyweds walking a wildflower-lined desert trail, mountain ranges layered in the distance.

Bride and groom share a laughing kiss under dappled tree shade outside a sunlit courthouse-style building, a lighthearted beat in their California elopement.

Why a California Elopement Doesn’t Need a Strict Itinerary

There’s so much pressure to have every hour accounted for, every location scouted, every detail locked in, and I understand where that comes from. You want it to be perfect, and you’ve been thinking about this day for a long time.

But the elopements I find myself thinking about long after they’re over are rarely the ones with the tightest timelines. They’re the ones where something unexpected happened because there was room for it to. A detour that turned into the best photos of the day. A quiet moment that nobody planned for but everyone felt. When you over-schedule an elopement, you end up managing logistics instead of living inside the day you worked so hard to create. Locking in what actually matters and leaving the rest open isn’t risky; it’s one of the best decisions you can make.

Why San Diego Is Such a Good Place to Start a California Elopement

There’s a quality to San Diego that settles into you pretty quickly. The beaches are unhurried, the summer light arrives warm and stays that way, and the whole place has this easy coastal energy that makes it really hard to feel rushed. Starting the day there set a tone that carried through everything that came after.

July specifically is such a good time for a California elopement in San Diego because you’re past the June gloom, the afternoons are longer and golden, and the coast feels so alive without being overwhelming. We didn’t have to do much to make the morning feel special because the location was already doing all of that on its own.

Groom dips his bride for a kiss on the tide-washed rocks, waves crashing just behind them.

The bride flings her arm out mid-laugh on the rocky shoreline, groom beside her in his dress blues — pure joy captured during their California elopement.

From the Beach to the Mountains and Why the Drive Was the Best Part

After the beach, we got in the car and drove into the mountains, and honestly, this might be my favorite part of the whole day. It was so fun to not have to worry about quests or timelines and literally just drive around with this sweet couple and capture the spontaneous moments!

The drive itself became part of the elopement too, not just transportation between spots! I loved that these two were just down for the ride and were just excited to be together more than anything! We weren’t rushing to the next thing on a list. We were just moving through the day together and letting it unfold. What’s Actually Worth Planning for a California Elopement

Obviously going with the flow doesn’t mean planning nothing. It just means being intentional about what actually needs to be planned and leaving the rest flexible! Here’s what I’d actually plan:

Book your photographer early because photographers book really far in advance and fill up fast, especially in the summer in California since the weather is so nice.

Have a general sense of your locations. Knowing you want to start at the beach and then go to your favorite coffee shop, or go on a hike in the mountains and do your vows at the top.

Think about your outfits ahead of time since that’s one of those things that’s easy to push off and then stress about last minute.

Everything else can stay open and flexible! The best moments from this California elopement happened because nobody was trying to force them. Your wedding day (whether you’re eloping or having a big wedding) is all about you two! So include everything you love and leave out everything you don’t care for.
