Sean and Sydney got married on a regular Thursday in April, like a normal work day, and then somewhere in between all of that, they decided to go get married at the Houston courthouse! I loved everything about this day because it was so spontaneous and fun, but also very them. There’s something so genuinely romantic about two people who just decide they’re ready and go do it, no big production, no months of planning, just them and a courthouse and a whole lot of champagne afterward (even though they are still going to have a Cancun wedding later).
A courthouse wedding in Houston is one of those things that more couples should seriously consider, and Sean and Sydney are the perfect example of why!

If you’re thinking about a courthouse wedding in Houston, the first thing you need is a marriage license, which you can get through the Harris County Clerk’s office. It’s worth going directly to the Harris County Clerk’s website for the most current information on hours, fees, and requirements, since those details can change. Usually, you’ll just need a valid ID, and then apply for the license ahead of time since Texas has a 72-hour waiting period after the license is issued before you can legally marry, and then you show up and say your vows. That’s really it!
The whole process is a lot more straightforward than most couples expect, and knowing that ahead of time takes a lot of the mystery out of it. A courthouse wedding in Houston doesn’t require months of planning. It requires a license, the right person, and maybe a bottle of champagne for after!

This is the thing I want couples to really hear! A courthouse wedding in Houston is still your wedding day. It still counts, it still matters, and it can still feel incredibly meaningful and romantic if you let it. Sean and Sydney are proof of that. We laughed the whole morning, ran around downtown Houston, popped champagne, and a really sweet courthouse worker even let us shoot inside after hours, which was such an unexpected and sweet moment that made the whole day feel even more special.
The intimacy of a courthouse wedding is actually one of its biggest strengths. There’s no crowd to perform for, no timeline to stress about, no seating chart drama. It’s just the two of you fully present with each other, and that kind of simplicity creates some of the most genuine and romantic moments I’ve ever gotten to document as a Houston elopement photographer.

Just because it’s a courthouse doesn’t mean it has to feel rushed! Here are a few things that make a big difference. Dress how you actually want to dress, whether that’s a full wedding gown, a white sundress, or something you already own that makes you feel really good. Bring champagne and pop it after, somewhere outside, somewhere with good light, somewhere that feels like a celebration. Invite whoever matters most, whether that’s your whole family or literally nobody, because you just want it to be the two of you.
And seriously, consider hiring a photographer. Not because you have to, but because a courthouse wedding in Houston moves fast, and those moments go by so quickly. Sean and Sydney have a whole gallery from a day that most people would have just let slip by undocumented, and that gallery is something they’ll have forever. The courthouse worker who snuck us in after hours, the champagne, the laughter downtown, all of it is there because someone was there to capture it.

I know it can feel unnecessary for a day that feels so small and simple, but that’s actually exactly why it matters. The small days are the ones that sneak up on you later. Sean and Sydney’s courthouse wedding in Houston happened on what started as a completely ordinary Thursday, and now they can plan their bigger celebration in Cancun, but with less stress!
As a Houston elopement photographer, I genuinely love these days. There’s no pressure, no rigid timeline, no posed family portraits to get through. It’s just two people who are really happy and a really good story unfolding naturally. Those are the days I get to just follow along and document what’s actually happening, and the photos always reflect that kind of ease and joy.

Start with the marriage license! Head to the Harris County Clerk’s website and get that sorted first, since the 72-hour waiting period means you can’t just show up and get married the same day. Once your license is ready, think about what you actually want the day to feel like. Do you want it to just be the two of you, or do you want a few people there? Do you want portraits afterward somewhere downtown, or do you want to head straight to dinner? There’s no wrong answer; it’s your day!
Give yourself more time than you think you need for photos if you’re hiring a photographer. Downtown Houston has so many good spots, and you’ll want time to actually enjoy the morning rather than rushing through it. Sean and Sydney gave us a solid chunk of time after the ceremony, and it made such a difference in how relaxed and fun the whole thing felt.
A courthouse wedding in Houston can be as simple or as intentional as you want it to be. The beauty of it is that you get to decide all the fun details!
