Madi and Calin’s September engagement session in North Houston is an all-time favorites. The outfits were so good, the energy was relaxed, and it just felt like a little sunset date night that I got to tag along on with my camera. Nothing was overdone or felt stiff. Looking back at the gallery, you can just tell that these two were completely comfortable being themselves. That’s what I want for every single couple I photograph, and a lot of it starts with what you decide to wear. So if you’ve been sitting there with your notes app open, a Pinterest board going, and absolutely no idea what to wear for engagement photos, this one is for you!

To be honest, the couples whose engagement photos turn out the most genuine are almost always the ones who kept it simple. It doesn’t mean boring either! It just means you aren’t spending the whole session tugging at something that doesn’t feel right or wondering if you look okay. You put it on, feel good, and then just focus on actually enjoying the evening together; that’s when the good stuff happens! And that’s genuinely the biggest thing I want couples to take away when they’re thinking about what to wear for engagement photos.
The formula that works almost every single time is a neutral base with one element that adds a little something. For Madi and Calin’s first look, that was a simple white dress for her and a blue shirt and jeans for him. So clean, so easy, and so well coordinated without looking like they planned it down to the last detail. The neutral tones let the surroundings do their thing and kept everything feeling grounded.
You want your outfits to complement each other without being identical. You don’t need to be wearing the same color or the same vibe, but there should be a thread connecting the two looks. Madi and Calin both had white as an anchor, and it tied them together really naturally without either of them looking like they were trying too hard.

One of the most common questions I get about what to wear for engagement photos is about color, and the answer is always the same. Whites, creams, soft blues, warm neutrals, denim, olive, and muted tones all look so good. They keep the focus on your faces and your connection rather than pulling the eye somewhere else, which is exactly what you want. The things worth skipping are really loud prints, neon or super saturated colors, and very dark head-to-toe looks, especially if you’re shooting in the evening when the light is lower. Matching outfits can also sometimes read a little stiff in photos, even when they look great in person. Coordinated outfits are almost always going to serve you better than perfectly matchy!

You don’t have to buy a brand-new outfit specifically for your engagement session if you don’t want to! Brand new clothes sometimes have a way of feeling like a costume because you haven’t broken them in yet, and you’ll spend half the session thinking about whether they fit right. That energy shows up in photos more than people realize! The same goes for shoes; if you’re walking around for an hour or two, wear something you can actually move in. Uncomfortable shoes affect your whole body, and it always translates into the photos.
Don’t over-coordinate to the point where it feels too planned! The goal is for your photos to look like a real evening together. Beyond that, you can really just trust the process. Figuring out what to wear for engagement photos doesn’t have to be stressful. Most of the time, the answer is already hanging in your closet.

When couples feel comfortable and like themselves from the moment they arrive, everything about the session shifts. They aren’t distracted, they aren’t self-conscious, and they stop performing for the camera pretty quickly. That’s when I get to actually document them instead of just photographing them. As a documentary style photographer, that distinction means everything to me.
Madi and Calin are such a good example of this. The whole session felt like I was just quietly following along while they had a really good evening together. So much of that came down to the fact that they felt completely at ease in what they were wearing. Good outfits create the conditions for genuine moments! Those genuine moments are what make engagement photos worth having on your wall ten years from now.

Getting to photograph this session was such a gift, but what makes it even more special is that it was just the beginning. Since then, I’ve photographed Madi’s bridals, and now they are parents (!!!), so I’ve gotten to document that sweet season of their life too. Being trusted to show up for all of those moments is genuinely one of my favorite things about this work, and it all started with a sunset evening in Houston and two really good outfit combinations.
